Biography
Rebecca Shkeyrov (b. 1997, Fairfax, Virginia, USA) is an American painter of Korean and Ukrainian heritage who now lives and works in Paris, France, where she is currently artist-in-residence at Le 100 Espace Créatif. She holds a BFA from William & Mary. Her work has been shown in cities across the United States and is held in private collections internationally. She is represented by the Linda Matney Gallery in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Artistic approach
The rosy pink of a flushed cheek, the geometry of an empty doorframe, an angel roaming an alien land…These are fragments of Rebecca Shkeyrov’s worldbuilding, collecting and weaving precious moments from both deep observation and surreal imagination. Mise en abyme frequently appears as a time- and reality-bending ethos, allowing Shkeyrov to reflect on the layers of memory and history that form between herself and the friends, lovers, and family she depicts in her work. The impetus to bring an idea to canvas usually comes from flashes of insight while on the Paris metro, in hypnotic trance, or amidst late-night adventures. Deeply personal narratives join with inspiration from French greats to create Shkeyrov’s singularly colorful and dreamy work.
