Painting
Between dreams, fears and nostalgia
Born in Vancouver, Maria Maksacheva grew up in Moscow before immigrating to France in 2012. Since 2017, she has lived in Paris, where she develops a multidisciplinary practice that combines painting, writing, sewing, collage, and assemblage using found objects. Her work explores themes of wandering, origins, and uprootedness. Introspective and intimate, it unfolds like a journey through memories and dreams, inviting viewers to question memory, identity, and personal experience. A graduate in contemporary arts and human sciences, she is particularly interested in the links between artistic creation, creative space, and mental health. Her work has been the subject of several solo and group exhibitions focusing on the concepts of belonging, exile, and psychological well-being. In 2024, Maria Maksacheva received a grant from the French Institute as part of the support program for Russian creation in exile, which led to a residency at the Albatros Contemporary Art Center in Montreuil and a solo exhibition as part of the residency’s outcome. Her latest exhibition, titled Back To The Old House, was held at Paname Art Café from October 9 to 30, 2025.
