TANGY WORLDS ON THE EDGE • Existential vertigo & Pop culture
Biography
Sofigael M., or Sophie-Gaëlle Martin, is a French multidisciplinary artist, painter, poet and visual creator who lives near Paris. Drawing and photography have been part of her life since childhood. As a teenager, she attended drawing classes at the École des Beaux-Arts de Boulogne-sur-Mer and developed her photography practice in parallel. She later earned a Master’s degree in Economics and Business Management, before working in institutional and political communications in Paris. In 2022, she discovered oil painting and found in it a space where visual language, critical reflection and imagination could finally converge. Two years later, she made a decisive commitment to her artistic practice, returning to studies in graphic and digital design while devoting herself fully to painting. Self-taught as a painter, she combines a surrealist and symbolist visual language with the social-critical approach of Narrative Figuration. Vivid colours, references to pop culture and dark humour shape her explorations of existential angst. Her bittersweet stories examine social pressure, alienation, and intimate and collective upheavals. In her current series, "Fractals under surreal constraints," she observes how domestic spaces and daily routines can become sites of psychological and social tension. Sofigael M.’s work has received international recognition: in 2026, she was selected for the longlist of the international ArtEvol 2026 competition, "A View from Everywhere" ; in 2025 and 2026, she was a finalist and semi-finalist in the Tartget Painting Prize ; she also received the Luxembourg Art Prize Certificate of Artistic Merit twice, in 2024 and 2025. Her artwork has been selected for publication in the Winter 2026 issue of Art Seen Magazine, published by The Curator’s Salon. She has also been featured in the art publications Nevadart, ArtMajeur Magazine and Obscyra, and has received an Editor’s Choice distinction on the ArtMajeur platform.
Artistic approach
In the lineage of French Narrative Figuration, my oil paintings - social critiques tinged with dark humour - are nourished by pop culture and the graphic codes of the 1970s and 1980s. “Nothing will ever be the same again.” Through bittersweet scenes set in vivid, tangy colours, blending surrealism and symbolism, I explore existential anxieties and capture the tipping point of intimate dramas and collective catastrophes. Faced with the tragedies that weigh upon them, my heroines and heroes respond less with revolt than with a quiet resistance: a certain nonchalance, an insolent charm, and a defiant elegance inherited from the “No Future” ethos of the second half of the 20th century. In the “Extrasolar Utopias“ series and its sub-series “Nebula Bay“, I explore dystopian worlds shaped by science fiction and cosmology, a kind of contemporary “Twilight Zone“ in which exoticism is merely a deceptive backdrop, concealing the catastrophe brewing beneath the surface. Ecology lies at the thematic core of these works. My current series, “Fractals under surreal constraints“, depicts an Earth going off the rails, populated by troubled characters. I examine the human condition and portray the existential hell of individuals on the brink of breakdown, trapped in repetitive routines and subjected to absurd constraints. The geometry of the series is built around recurring lines - wall patterns, tiles, furniture, railings, hedges… -, creating a sense of confinement around the characters, but also tracing overlooked paths and possibilities they fail to see. Through its rigour, it offers an ironic counterweight to the psychological chaos engulfing them. Dominated by blue - a deceptively restrained blue infiltrated by red and charged with a latent violence ready to erupt - the series turns the home and domestic spaces, and, by extension, intimate and family relationships, into a territory of tension where reality gradually begins to falter, in step with human unravelling. By confronting my characters with the collapse of the systemic or psychological structures that kept them in a certain state of alienation, I probe the human psyche and its search for meaning, exploring cognitive distortions and liminal states at the boundary between fantasy and reality.
